NECESSITY OF TESTING ON ANIMALS

Animals are used in research when there are no other methods available to conduct the test of medicines or medical devices for treatment. Humans and animals have hundreds of similar illnesses, so animals are sometime use as models for the study of human disease. Mice, Rat, Guinea pigs, Rabbits, Dogs and other Rodents are most widely use for the testing of medications. Testing of compound is very important to assess the risk benefits of the compound initially the compound undergoes invitro testing and then it may be tested on animal models.

Use of animals for experiment in education, training and research is an integral part of Pharmacology at medical college, Pharmacy, veterinary institutes. It is an important part of basic research and preclinical drug discovery process. Animal models are use because of difficulties or impossibilities to test the compound or drug directly using target species i.e., Humans. It is mandatory to do extensive toxicological studies in animal before the candidate drug get approval for clinical trials in humans. However, there are several alternative methods are employed for the testing of drug candidate like Full thickness skin model, In sillico Method, Cell Line Technique, Patch Clamp Technique. However, it is not possible to replace whole animal model with in-vitro systems to evaluate drug effect on major organ systems. Alternative techniques can only reduce the number of animals needed for the study. Animal testing is necessary for every prescription medicine available in the market today. The U.S. FDA requires animal testing to ensure the safety of many drugs and devices.

Conclusion: Testing on animals should be conducted under the strict guidelines across the globe. The testing on animals should be conducted under the supervision of researcher with the required qualification and experience. Experiments which involve surgeries must be conducted under the action of appropriate anesthesia with an appropriate dose. The experiments should be conducted in such a way that the animals should not be suffer from unnecessary pain or consequences.
